The World Cup is arguably the best and largest football competition in the world, with thirty two nations coming together every four years to compete against each other in order to get their hands on the prestigious FIFA World Cup trophy. The current holders are four times winner Germany.

Their previous World Cup win came in 2014 where they defeated Argentina 1-0 in the final after extra time thanks to a Mario Götze goal. The World Cup 2018 betting odds suggest that the Germans will lift the trophy for the second consecutive tournament this summer.

However, the odds also suggest that the nation will have to keep an eye on teams such as Brazil, France, Spain, and Argentina who all have a chance of making it very far in the tournament and possibly winning the entire thing.

Although the favourites for the tournament are teams which have made multiple appearances at the World Cup, teams which are set their first appearance at the tournament don’t have much expectation to make it to the later stages of the tournament.

Both Iceland and Panama will be making their World Cup debut this summer after automatically qualifying for the tournament in their respective qualifying groups. Iceland managed to take the first position in their group, finishing two points ahead of second place Croatia.

Meanwhile Panama qualified for the tournament in dramatic fashion, scoring a winning goal in the 88th minute against Costa Rica to take them to their first even World Cup tournament. Although these two teams managed to qualify for the first time, there were other teams which narrowly missed out on making their debut appearance.

Syria almost managed to qualify for the inter-confederation play-offs where they would have played against Honduras. Unfortunately, they were narrowly knocked out against Australia 2-3 on aggregate thanks to a Tim Cahill goal in the 109th minute. That defeat meant that Syria still hadn’t qualified for the tournament in 14 attempts.

Meanwhile in South America remained the only CONMEBOL team to never qualify for the World Cup as they finished bottom of the group stage with only two wins.

This infographic which has been created, looks at some of the teams which have failed to make a single appearance at a World Cup tournament. Some of the countries which haven’t featured should come as no surprise, but there are other teams on this infographic which might shock you. Have a look.
