Manchester United have an interest in me - Raphael Varane

Manchester United long standing interest in French defender Raphael Varane has refused to go away as the Frenchman confirms there has been contact from the Red Devils in the past.

Varane was heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford in 2011, but a move failed to materialized as he opted to sign for European champions Real Madrid.

The Red Devils failure to sign the 24-year-old saw them sign Phil Jones from Blackburn in the summer of 2011 for a reported fee of £16.5 million.

Meanwhile, since Jose Mourinho took over the reins at United from Louis Van Gaal in 2016, the talks of Varane re-uniting with his former manager at Old Trafford has continued for the past two seasons.

Despite the Special One boasting of plethora of options in defence, United still look shaky at the back and with the likes of Smalling, Phil Jones, and Victor Lindelof failing to convince after series of injuries and inconsistent displays, Varane has been linked with a move to Old Trafford this summer with the Portuguese tactician looking for an ideal partner with Eric Bailly.

However, the Real Madrid defender has revealed that the 20-time Premier League champions at a point were interested in signing him.

Speaking on if he has been contacted by Mourinho to join him at United, he said:

"No, not directly.

"There were contacts, but not directly."

The French international has enjoyed a trophy laden career at the Spanish capital having won a total of 14 major trophies since moving to the Bernabeu.

He has established himself as a regular for the Los Blancos and has developed into one of the top centre backs in the world and is known for his concentration, awareness, aerial prowess, strength, pace, technique, tackling, and his ability to read the game well.
